We have two job openings at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Student Academic Support Services (SASS): Assistant Director and Education Specialist. AT UTHSC, we work with students in each of the colleges including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Allied Health, Nursing and Graduate Health Sciences.

Educational Specialist: The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is looking for an Educational Specialist to provide direct academic support services to students in each of the colleges and departments at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center including the coordination, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of services. This position will provide direct student services, academic counseling, and learning strategies instruction in areas specifically affecting student adjustment to the demands of the health science environment such as time management, reading efficiency, anxiety and stress, note-taking, organization for learning, test-taking, board preparation, problem-solving, math enhancement, and related topics.

Requirements: Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling or related field and 2 years of experience in an academic setting. Experience in areas of learning, reading and study styles; tutorial services, career counseling and/or retention program experience required. Candidate should possess experience working with adult students (experience developing programs for diverse populations preferred); ability to work effectively with a broad range of people including faculty, staff, students, health care professionals and members of the general public. Must have excellent organizational and planning skills and initiative in developing curricular plans for students; ability to work independently and as a member of a team in developing academic support services. Must have a thorough understanding of learning theories, strategies and individualized diagnostic-prescriptive academic counseling; advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word, Works Database, and Publisher). Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills. (Transcript Required).

Assistant Director: Under the general supervision of the Director, the Assistant Director will provide leadership and management in all aspects of the Campus-Wide Tutoring Program. This position will also assist the Director in the supervision of SASS staff to include the HCP educational specialists, disability coordinator and HCP/Educational Coordinator to ensure student centered services are meeting the needs of health science students.

Requirements: Master’s Degree preferably in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Business or related field; three (3) years experience in education, management, counseling to include management and/or supervision of staff, evaluating and developing office procedures and budget management; Or Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years experience as stated above. Candidate must have strong management skills; skilled and in the areas of learning, reading and studying styles, tutorial services, career counseling and/or summer enrichment program experience (adult student experience preferred) ; thorough understanding of learning theories, strategies, and individualized diagnostic-prescriptive academic counseling; must have student services skills and excellent customer services skills; possess a commitment to ensuring and preserving the highest degree of confidentiality. Must have experience communicating in a variety of modalities including online, phone, individual face-to-face meetings and large group presentations. Must have experience and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations; ability to work with a broad range of people including faculty, staff, students, health care professionals, and the general public. Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills; attention to detail; high level of initiative; and ability to work independently and as a team member in developing academic support services. Must possess advance computer skills in MS Office Suite (specifically Word, Works Database, and Publisher). Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
