Graduate Assistants and Graduate Scholarships

From Associate Dean Ernest Rakow:

Faculty and Graduate Advisors,
The University Graduate Studies Council on Friday, April 6th approved two items which may impact a many of our graduate students and especially graduate assistants.
1. Each graduate assistant must enroll in a minimum of 9 semester hours each fall and spring semester while on an assistantship. (This is a reduction from the current requirement of 12 hours.) These should be content based courses which will count toward the graduate degree. Capable students are encouraged to enroll in 12 hours per semester to facilitate progress toward degree completion. Courses like Research for Graduate Assistants and Teaching for Graduate Assistants should be used only if they will (a) count toward the degree and (b) have meaningful academic content.
2. Presidential Tuition-Service Scholarships for Graduate Students will be available in fall 2013. These scholarships are for students who normally would be paying tuition, will cover the cost of enrolling for 6 hours, and will require 75 hours of service per semester. Recipients may be part time or full time. Recipients must be fully admitted to a graduate program, sign a contract agreeing to a particular service component of 75 hours per semester and make satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
